That “Almost Ready” Feeling

the feeling of never really being ready

Hope you’re doing well,

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much time we spend stuck in the almost phase. Almost filming a video. Almost finishing the edit. Almost putting something out into the world. The self doubt in that feeling, it takes away from the creative process.

I get it—I’ve been there. But looking back, the work I’m proudest of isn’t the stuff I sat on forever, waiting for it to be perfect. It’s the stuff I actually finished. Here’s a story:

The video that most of you may have seen on my channel was titled “Why You Need to Start a Vlog and Document Your Life”. This video took me about 12 hours to make, I filmed it in between travelling, airport waiting, bus stops, subway rides, and walking home. Then I woke up the next morning edited it one go without much thinking, and hit upload. Didn’t think much about it, just a video of me yapping while traveling because I was bored and waiting. Here’s the kicker, that video now sits at 200K views and boosted my channel from around 6,000 subscribers to a community of over 26,000.

Crazy stuff right? If I never just hit record and pushed myself past that initial hurdle of “almost creating something” I just wouldn’t be the creator that I am now. If I spent more time finding the right angles, setting up my gear, scripting out my words, editing, colour grading, over complicating the process… that video wouldn’t have turned out the way it did.

There’s something special about completing a creative project and I am willing bet that every single one of us has one that’s been sitting in the deepest parts of our brains or hard drives, waiting to be completed. This just goes to show how the act of completion will always mean more than almost being perfect.

So once again, if you’ve got clips sitting on your hard drive waiting for the right moment, this is it. The LUT I released is the same one I’ve been using for the past year to give my videos a polished, cinematic look. And similiarly if your footage feels like it’s almost there, click here to grab the cinematic vlog LUT and get that project finished.

Happy creating!
Jason
